Iron, a Lola Guhl atelier sculpture, simplifies geometric designs found in Central Asian art and architecture into a visual depiction of political theory and globalization. Inspired by gates found at the tenth century Ismael Samani Mausoleum in Bukhara, the piece binds the essence of Islamic pattern in wood with colorful, organically flowing fabric. Incorporating silk into the piece, which has come to symbolize the movement of commodities between cultures, imbues a new spirit – ideas merge – culture shifts – angular patterns bend with the influence of the organic form.
